SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DESIGNER SELECTED FOR NEW YORK MUSEUM DISPLAY

Newport Beach, CA – Dogmopolitan, the premier maker of upscale furniture for dogs, was chosen to exhibit a customized sofa in the New-York Historical Society's "Petropolis" showcase which opened July 15 in New York City. The special piece, designed by Dogmopolitan co-founders Lex Gable and Bryan Elparin, is a chaise lounge covered in red and gold chenille, and accented with gold satin cording and a single tassel that wraps into an ornate rosette.

"It's an incredible honor to be included in this historical retrospective," Gable says. "When I started designing these couches at home over a year ago, I never thought our work would come to represent the opulence that modern pet owners lavish upon their furry friends."

"Petropolis: A Social History of Urban Animal Companions" is a thought-provoking exhibition on the history of domesticated animals in the American urban environment. The presentation, slated to run through November, will survey the evolution of pets from their early appearance in the New World and their gradual insinuation into the nuclear urban family. Kathleen Hulser, co-curator at N-YHS, said Petropolis designers wanted to include luxury items in the display to show the status pets have achieved in the social structure of families.

"We felt that Dogmopolitan's beautiful little sofas really caught the essence of Petropolis," Hulser said. "The fact that Dogmopolitan's creations are made to match human couches only strengthens the message that pets are seen as equals and loved just as much as offspring or spouses."

Petropolis is a joint effort between the New-York Historical Society and The Humane Society of New York. The Dogmopolitan couch created for this display will be auctioned after the exhibit to raise money for the Humane Society of New York.

Dogmopolitan's luxurious creations, costing between $350 and $2000, are available in a wide array of brocades, chenilles and jacquards. There are more than 80 lavish fabrics for pet owners to choose from when matching a dog sofa to a home's interior – or pet lovers can select their own material! Experienced craftsmen base every handmade chair on a sturdy hardwood frame. Each exceptional couch is made in the United States and is painstakingly hand upholstered.

Gable and Elparin recognized the need for canine-specific seating after Gable's dogs took an unfortunate liking to new, expensive furnishings in her home. "I didn't want my brand-new furniture ruined," Gable said, "but I felt bad taking my precious pooches off the seats."

Drawing on Gable's artistic abilities and Elparin's background in furniture manufacturing, the duo developed couches specifically for the dogs. When the pets first saw the completed sofas, the pooches "jumped right on and have never bothered with human couches again," Elparin said.

Friends who saw the sofas insisted that similar pieces be constructed for their pets. Word of mouth spread and soon people were calling from all around asking for customized canine couches – and Dogmopolitan was born.
